1 Introduction to precipitated barium sulfate

1.1 Properties of Precipitated Barium Sulfate

Chemical Formula: BaSO4 , Molecular Weight: 233.39, CAS: NO.7727-43-7, National Standard: GB/T2889-2017, Appearance: Colorless Oblique Crystal or White No Styling Powder, Relative Density 4.50 (15℃), Melting Point 1580 ℃. MOHS Hardness:3.0, Index of Refraction: 1.64, Solubility: 20 ℃: 0.00024g/100g water. It can absorb harmful rays.It almost insoluble in water, ethanol, organic solvents, acids and alkalies. But it can dissolved in boiling hot sulfuric acid. It Is the only non-toxic common barium salt. It can be reduced to barium sulfide and carbon dioxide at 600℃ by carbon.

1.2 Mainly Application

Precipitated barium sulfate is a kind of environmental protection functional material because of its strong chemical inertia, good stability, acid and alkali resistance, moderate hardness, high whiteness, high gloss, absorption of harmful x, gamma rays and reflection of ultraviolet rays. Therefore, it is widely used in various coatings (such as water-based, oil-based and powder coatings, automotive paint, wood paint, exterior wall paint, anti-corrosion paint, high gloss paint, electronic ink, etc.), modified plastics, automotive plastics, home appliance shell, film, building materials plastics, rubber, elastomer, papermaking, cosmetics and other fillers. It can also be used as swallowing agent (called barium meal) for gastrointestinal fluoroscopy, cathode expansion rod of storage battery, surface coating agent for printing paper and copper plate paper, sizing agent for textile industry, and clarifying agent for glass products. It can play the role of defoaming and increasing luster. It can be used as a protective wall material against radiation, and can be used in nuclear facilities, atomic energy plants, X-ray laboratories, etc. With X-ray developing function, it can be used for medical developing fiber and children's toys. It is used for drain pipe, sound box and sound system, which can effectively isolate noise. It can also be used in pharmaceutical synthetic chemical industry, perfume and pigment industry.

1.3 Product Introduction

M-700 is a new achievement developed by Yunfu Hongzhi New Materials Co., Ltd through many scientific research institutions. It adopts new process technology. The product has small particle size, narrow distribution range, good chemical stability, high activation, good dispersion, high whiteness, low oil absorption and so on.It can be widely used in various coatings,plastic products,and can obviously improve the surface glossiness, hiding power, leveling property, impact resistance and adhesion of the products, and reduce the cost.

2 Test Situation

2.1 Dispersion of Precipitated Barium Sulfate M-700

40% A2560 was used as dispersion resin, 40% precipitated barium sulfate M-700 and 20% xylene as solvent. In the case of no dispersant and dispersant, high speed dispersion was carried out at different speeds.

Grinding conditions: high speed disperser, room temperature, 2000rPm * 20min, 3000rPm * 20min, slurry: zirconia bead = 1:1

2.2 Precipitated Barium Sulfate M-700 is used for High-gloss System

2.2.1 High Gloss Coatings

2.2.1.1 Simple Formulation and Testing of Coatings
At first, acrylic resin, titanium dioxide, precipitated barium sulfate, dispersant, defoamer and xylene were dispersed at high speed for 15-20 minutes, then BYK358N leveling agent was added, and dispersed at medium speed for 5 minutes, filtered lastly.

3 Test Summary

3.1 Precipitated barium sulfate M-700 can be used as pigment extender, or pigment synergist, which can replace some pigments, make the pigment disperse more evenly, and thus improve the color rendering efficiency (keep the color rendering and make the pigment use efficiency better)..

3.2 In a proper range, using ultrafine precipitated barium sulfate M-700 to replace some pigments, which will not affect the color concentration and hiding power of pure color paste and paint. In addition, the color concentration of the paint can be increased to a certain extent.

3.3 After adding precipitated barium sulfate M-700 in the system, the gloss of the paint film is improved, it is easier to level, the bubbles are reduced, and the smoothness is also improved to some extent.

3.4 The precipitated barium sulfate M-700 is easy to disperse, so it can be dispersed at high speed with suitable dispersant.

3.5 Precipitated barium sulfate M-700 is more difficult to precipitate than many inorganic pigments and fillers.

3.6 Using precipitated barium sulfate M-700 as filler will not reduce the gloss of paint film.

3.7 The precipitated barium sulfate M-700 has a certain anti floating effect.

4 Application Recommendation

4.1 Product Quality

Adding 10% of precipitated barium sulfate M-700 can improve the film properties, such as gloss, leveling, defoaming, mechanical strength, smoothness, and pigment deposition. At the same time, the color concentration of the paste with precipitated barium sulfate M-700 is increased.

4.2 Cost Reduction

Precipitated barium sulfate M-700 is used to replace part of the pigment, and the replacement is about 10% of the pigment amount , which greatly reduces the cost of the coating.

4.3 High Gloss Functional Filler

Compared with traditional fillers, such as calcium carbonate, talcum powder, alumina and domestic ordinary barium sulfate, precipitated barium sulfate M-700 has little effect on the gloss of paint film, and its weather resistance, acid and alkali resistance, easy dispersion and non precipitation are incomparable with other traditional fillers. Adding 20% precipitated barium sulfate M-700 as filler in the ink can enhance the ink skeleton, the ink luster will not be reduced, and the covering power will not change. When adding 10-20% precipitated barium sulfate M-700 as filler in the automotive primer, the gloss of the paint film will not decrease, and the gloss can still reach more than 90 degrees, which can reach the same gloss as the topcoat.

4.4 Functional Filler for Powder Coatings

Using precipitated barium sulfate M-700 as filler, it has the advantages of small oil absorption, good leveling, high gloss, good covering power and weather resistance. It can not only replace part of titanium dioxide, but also improve the film leveling. It will be significant in high gloss thin coating powder coatings.

4.5 Pigment Paste

10% titanium dioxide was replaced in the titanium dioxide slurry (60 parts of titanium dioxide were added before, 54 parts of titanium dioxide are added now, and 6 parts of ultrafine precipitated barium sulfate M-700 are added). Among the organic pigments, using ultrafine precipitation barium sulfate M-700 in phthalocyanine blue and phthalocyanine green with the best effect , and they are used in black pigment paste.

4.6 Silver Paste Whitening Agent

Adding ultrafine precipitated barium sulfate M-700 to plastic paint, household appliance paint and other metal effect coatings, which can partially eliminate the flop effect of ECKART SILTALLUX (a kind of silver paste from German), so that the silver paint can get more uniform and consistent tone from different angles, and improve the whiteness of silver paint in the sense.

4.7 Anti-corrosive Coatings
